Washington Youth Soccer teams prep for Regional Championships

June 5, 2014 10:56 AM

Over the course of this month, 36 boys and girls teams from across the state will travel to regional championships in New Mexico and California with one goal in mind — winning a national championship.

Most of the 36 teams, including 19 girls teams and 17 boys teams, already have one title under their belt this spring, having won their age groups in either the Virginia Mason Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup, or the Virginia Mason US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships. Others earned entry to the regional stage through their strong performances in the Far West Regional League (FWRL), where they matched up against elite teams from throughout the 14 states that comprise Region IV.

Regardless of how they've gotten here, they represent the best of the best in Washington state. Now, like Eastside FC 98 Red did just last year, they're hoping to become the best anywhere.

Today, action kicks off in Morgan Hill, Calif., at the 2014 Region IV Presidents Cup, where 10 boys and girls teams aged 13-17 are competing for the right to represent Washington Youth Soccer at the National Presidents Cup in Greenville, S.C., next month.

And next week, the first whistle will blow in the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in Albuquerque, N.M., where 26 Washington Youth Soccer state champions, wildcards and FWRL competitors in the Under-12 through Under-18 age groups will vie to emerge victorious and earn the Golden Ticket to the US Youth Soccer National Championships next month.
