EPD Camp Leads To National Team Call-Up for Washington's Sakura Yoshida

In June, 11 Washington Youth Soccer players were hand-picked by Elite Player Development program staff to attend a prestigious identification camp established by U.S. Soccer head coach Jill Ellis. The purpose of the camp was to uncover as-yet-undiscovered players throughout Region IV, who coaches thought had the talent to compete at the international level, but had so far been overlooked by the national team system.

2014-2015 Washington Youth Soccer EPD tryout registration now open

Players interested in participating in the Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program can now register for open tryouts for the 2014-2015 season. In a continued effort to search out the top talent from throughout the state, tryouts will be held at five locations around Washington, with players being encouraged to attend at least two of the three available sessions in their area. Registration for open tryouts should be completed by Friday, August 8.

The Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program held its first camp for the 2002 and 2003 boys and girls birth years this past weekend at Northwest Soccer Park in Bellingham. The camp brought together the top 02 and 03 players from around the state for training and games with Washington Youth Soccer EPD staff and guest coaches.

Elite Player Development Girls Invited to Prestigious National Camp

Over the past several years, U.S. Soccer Development Director Jill Ellis noticed a trend — more than 50 percent of the Youth National Team players were coming from Region IV, the far western region of US Youth Soccer that includes Washington Youth Soccer and 13 other state associations. Specifically, Ellis noted the high numbers of Washington players that were coming to the National Team training camps from outside the traditional leagues and pathways used to identify players.

Boys and Girls state teams in the 1997-2001 age groups are playing for the ODP Regional title, and winners of the 1997 and 1998 age groups are also competing for the opportunity to advance to the US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships in March in Frisco, Texas.
