The 2012 Fall PML will start play on Saturday, Sept 8, 2012 and conclude play on Sun, Nov 4, 2012. Except for teams playing in the League Champions Cup, it is possible some games will be scheduled for later weekends in November, depending on field availability and/or special scheduling requests.

What are the boundaries for the PML?

The boundaries for the Portland Metro League stretches from Longview, Washington in the North to Salem in the South, and from Hood River in the East to the coast in the West. The one exception is for High School boys. Teams from outside this geographic area are allowed to enter this league, but will not receive any home games. In those cases, we can schedule teams to play three games in one weekend if that is their preference, limiting the amount of travel.

What is the bracketing process for the PML?

Ideally, the minimum number of teams in a bracket is six, which creates a double round robin schedule for each team. Since there is no qualifying tournament to place teams in brackets, the key is collecting as much information as possible from each team prior to bracketing the league. This year, we will bracket the league on Monday, August 20th. We will use the results of all summer tournaments. We will also use the Fall 2011 PML standings, where appropriate. We expect to send out a questionnaire around the first of August requesting details about each team, including tournament results, league play results, etc. This information will be a key part of the information we use in placing teams in brackets at each age group.

How do special scheduling requests work?

One of the great advantages in playing in the PML is our ability to accommodate a wide range of special scheduling requests. Here are some of the things we can usually accommodate:

1.       Coaches with more than one team
2.       Teams that want to play as many games as possible on Saturdays
3.       Teams that want to play as many games as possible on Sundays
4.       Teams that want a particular weekend off to participate in other activities
5.       Teams that need to work around school activities
6.       Any other request that a team comes up with

Obviously, our ability to accommodate special requests is dependent on field availability and other factors, but we generally are able to accommodate the vast majority of requests. For coaches with two teams, for example, we typically try to schedule their home games back to back on the same dates, then put the away games on different dates, although that does not always work with the field availability we are given. One thing to be aware of, we sometimes have requests from two teams in the same bracket that are in conflict, one team requests Saturday games, one Sunday games, for example.

How do fields work with scheduling and special requests?

Scheduling games is absolutely dependent on the fields/times we are given. In some cases, we are unable to accommodate special requests due to field limitations. It is critically important that you let your club staff know about your special requests so they can help accommodate them with the field information they provide to us. Oregon Youth Soccer Association leagues by rule are scheduled as home-away leagues, meaning each team gets half home games and half away games.

Can teams play up in the PML?

There are situations where it makes sense for a particular team to play up one year in age group for competitive reasons. This is particularly true at the older ages, where teams have a verifiable history. In some cases, teams should contact us about the option of playing up. In other cases, we will contact particular teams about this subject. Our goal is to have the brackets be as competitive as possible.

What is the League Champions Tournament?

The top two teams in the Blue Divisions at U12, U13 and U14 boys and girls will be invited to participate in the 2nd annual Oregon Youth Soccer League Champions Tournament the weekend of November 10th & 11th, 2012. This tournament brings together the top two teams from each of the four Regional Leagues sanctioned by OYSA to play for the Regional League championship. This is a spectacular way to end the fall season, and we look forward to the tournament this year. The four participating leagues are the Portland Metro League, the Mid-Valley League, the Kidsports League and the Southern Oregon Classic League.

The PML is sanctioned by both Washington Youth Soccer and Oregon Youth Soccer. Participation in the league qualifies teams for participation in the Washington Youth Soccer State Cups (Founders Cup, Challenge Cup, or US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships).
