For nearly two years, underserved players in communities throughout the Seattle area have benefitted from Washington Youth Soccer's Soccer for Success program, which provides free after-school soccer instruction and nutrition education to elementary-school students, three times per week, in two 12-week sessions.
Thanks to a recent feature on the US Youth Soccer Show, the program is finally receiving the national recognition it deserves. The story – which aired Wednesday, May 7 on FOX Soccer Plus and FOX Soccer2Go (and is available around the clock on the show's YouTube channel), highlighted the efforts of program director Ellie Lipton and coach Travis Goodlett to utilize the game of soccer to teach local schoolchildren about the importance of exercise and healthy eating.
“The focus of Soccer for Success is four things,” says Goodlett. “Fitness, the mentorship with the coaches, the skills of soccer, and the nutrition component.”
