Golazo Futsal Cup Crowns Champions, But Everyone’s A Winner

December 23, 2013 01:58 PM

A total of 24 teams came from throughout the region to Seattle’s Rainier Community Center in December for the second Golazo Washington Youth Soccer Futsal Cup.

Futsal — the soccer-style game played indoors on a hard court, and featuring a smaller, lower-bounce ball — has become increasingly popular throughout the world as a means to teach improvisation and creativity to soccer players of all ages. The smaller, harder court and lower-bounce ball result in a more ground-based game, where off-ball movement, quick passing and strong footwork are among the most valuable skills. Popular in South America for nearly a century, futsal has officially been endorsed by the U.S. Soccer Federation as an excellent game to increase technical and developmental opportunities for our young players.

After having great success in the launch of Futsal Cup in 2011, Washington Youth Soccer brought back the Futsal Cup in 2013. With the support of beverage sponsor Golazo, 24 boys and girls teams in the U11/U12 and U13/U14 age groups came to the Rainier Community Center on Dec. 15 to play a series of round-robin games, culminating in championships for each age group.

In addition to a minimum of three games, each team had the opportunity to enjoy the community center’s other activities between games — including ping pong, pool and foosball — and sample numerous Golazo sports drinks. Over 11 hours of games were played in all, and Washington Youth Soccer Program and Event Manager Cole Morgan says that the event was a resounding success not only for organizers, but for the teams that participated as well.

"It was great to see how quickly players adapted to the speed of play of futsal, as it is so much different than outdoor soccer," Morgan says. "The teams that really stood out were those that already had experience playing futsal, which is a testament to how beneficial it is to improving a player’s touch and control on the ball. Everyone went home with a new appreciation for futsal and the benefits it provides to the development of a players abilities."
