TUKWILA, Wash. (Feb. 22, 2014) – The championship pairings are set in the Under-15 through Under-18 Boys Virginia Mason Washington Youth Soccer State Championships after semifinal games were played today at Starfire Sports in Tukwila.  Championship matches will be played Sunday, Feb. 23 at Starfire beginning at 10:00 am.  Teams in the Under-12 through Under-19 age groups are playing for the state title and the opportunity to compete at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships this summer.  The Under-12 through Under-14 Boys and Under-12 through Under-18 Girls State Championships are played in the spring.

The Washington Youth Soccer State Championships are part of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the oldest and most prestigious youth soccer national championship competition in the country.  State champions advance to the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships June 16-22 in Albuquerque, N.M., and winners of the four Regional Championships advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships to be held in Germantown, Md. July 21-27.  The four regional champions will join the top four finishers from the US Youth Soccer National League to play for the national crown.

In 2013, Under-14 Girls Eastside FC 98 Red claimed Washington’s first National Championship since 1999.  Washington teams have won five national titles, the first of which came in 1983.

Under-17 Boys PacNW 96 Maroon is on a late season surge and will play for the state title after finishing near-bottom in the top two league competitions.  PacNW finished in seventh place and needed to win a playoff game to remain in the Washington Youth Soccer Regional Club League (RCL) First Division next season.  The team also finished at the bottom of the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League (FWRL) Northern Division where their opponent in tomorrow’s state final, Eastside FC 96 Red, won the league to already earn a place Region IV Championships.

PacNW head coach Todd Stauber says his team turned a corner after facing a relegation playoff game to remain in the RCL First Division.

“To be honest, that was kind of a turning point for us. After that game there was a change in their character and there was just something from that game, a belief that came to them from that point forward. We didn’t take that much time off for Christmas, we trained very hard over the break. It was kind of after that game that was the catalyst for these guys, they just came together. It’s just cool to watch, just to sit back and see a group of guys realize, “Hey, this is a cool thing. We’ve got something special going here.” And to realize that and to seize the moment has been pretty cool to watch them do.”

PacNW knocked off two-time defending state champion Washington Premier FC 96 Black, 4-1, to advance to the state final.  Washington Premier has been finalists and quarterfinalists at the Regional Championships in each of the last two years, respectively.

“We were a second division team last year, we were at the bottom of the RCL Division I all year. For these guys, they’re just recognizing what they can do as players. I don’t even think they realize the magnitude of what’s going on, they’re just trying to play.”
